JOIN US FOR AN OLD FASHIONED PICNIC AT THE HISTORIC AND SCENIC GROUNDS OF THE BOHEMIAN NATIONAL CEMETERY.

  • The grounds of the Bohemian National Cemetery provide the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy a summer afternoon.
  • Enter through the cemetery's 1893 historic Late Gothic Revival Gatehouse
  • Stroll amidst the artistic and unique monuments in a naturalistic setting
  • Visit the magnificent 1919 columbarium and chapel which is on the National Register of Historic Place.

Rededication of Cermak Road

 

The month long Prague-Chicago Days celebration concluded on June 30, 2007 with the Rededication of Cermak Road. Anton Cermak was born in Bohemia and is the only foreign born mayor of Chicago. He was assassinated while riding in a motorcade with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933

The rededication ceremony began in the Bohemian National Cemetery at the Cermak Mausoleum. In attendance were H.E. Petr Kolar, Ambassador to the United States, CR; Honorable Marek Skolil, Consul General, CR; Mrs. Marketa Reedova, Deputy Mayor of Prague, CR; Tomas Chalupa, Mayor Prague 6, CR Radovan Steiner, Alderman Prague, CR; Judy Barr Topinka and Anton Cermak Kerner, great-grandson of Mayor Anton Cermak.

The ceremony included a wreath laying at the mausoleum and speeches by Ambassador Kolar, Mayor Chalupa, Alderman Steiner and Judy Barr Topinka.

After the ceremony at the cemetery, the rededication was held in Dvorak Park located at Cermak Road and May Streets. For that, Mayor Richard Daley was joined by City of Chicago Aldermen and members of the Mexican Consular Staff as well as the representatives of the Czech Republic.

MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY

 

The first Memorial Day Commemoration at Bohemian National Cemetery was on May 29, 1892 when the Civil War Monument was dedicated. The Cemetery Association has held Memorial Day services through the years, and again this year we will honor those who have protected our freedom.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 26, 2008 in the chapel of the Crematorium. A reception in the administration building will begin at 9:00 AM, and at 9:30 the guests will march to the Crematorium lead by the Sokol Spirit Color Guard.

Everyone is welcome and urged to attend the ceremony, and tour the cemetery. During the week preceding Memorial Day volunteers will place American flags on the graves of more than 2500 veterans at rest in the cemetery. This web-site contains the names of the veterans thus far identified as being buried at Bohemian National Cemetery. Anyone wishing to assist in placing flags on the veterans’ graves is asked to contact the cemetery office (708-788-8442, 773-539-8442 or bnca2003@sbcglobal.net).

April 18, 2007     Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

 

On Wednesday April 18, 2007 the Bohemian National Cemetery was honored with a visit by members of the Constitutional and Judicial Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The dignitaries placed a wreath at the Cermak Mausoleum and toured the Chapel in the Crematorium as well as the cemetery.

The members of the Parliament of The Czech Republic who visited The Bohemian National Cemetery on April 18, 2007 are (from left to right) Mr.Jeronym Tejc, Mr. Stanislav Krecek (Vice Chairman of the Committee), Mr. Jiri Polansky (Vice Chairman of the Committee), Mr. Zdenek Prosek and in the middle Michaela Frkova (Department of International Relations).

PRESS RELEASE.

The Bohemian National Cemetery Association cordially invites you to join us Sunday, May 11,2008 (Mother's Day) at 1 pm at 5255 N Pulaski Road, Chicago Il. The Albin Polasek "Mother" sculpture located outside the Crematorium/Columbarium will be re-dedicated on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Mother's Day. The "Mother" sculpture is the only cemetery monument in the United States which honors mothers.

Albin Polasek taught at the Art Institute of Chicago for over 30 years and was also the head of the Sculpture Department. Two of this Czechoslovak born artists' sculptures are located at the Bohemian National Cemetery. Complimentary tea will follow the re-dedication in the Victorian Gatehouse at the Bohemian National Cemetery which is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places.

Roses in honor of mothers/grandmothers (red for living;white for deceased) will be available at a cost os $5.00 each and should be ordered before May 4th, 2008. to have the name of the mother/grandmother included in a special booklet to be given to all present.
